A thin line of light from a gap in the curtains, a standby LED, the early summer dawn, any one of them is enough to keep you surfacing. A mask only earns its place if it blocks all of it and stays comfortable enough to keep on till morning.
That is where most of them fail. Cheap masks leave a gap at the nose that lets a wedge of light straight in, press on your eyes the moment you turn onto your side, or run so hot you take them off at 3am. So we scored on the two things that decide whether a mask actually works: does it block every scrap of light, and is it still comfortable when you are lying on your side?
The weak point is the bridge of the nose. A flat panel of fabric leaves a small triangular gap there, and that gap is all it takes for dawn or a charging light to reach your eyes.
The winner is contoured to seal against the nose and cheekbones, so there is no gap for light to find, and the silk sits flat enough that side sleepers do not feel it pressing on the eyes.
Contoured to seal against nose and cheekbones — no gap for light to find.
See our #1 pick ›Across weeks of real nights, the BOLLSEN Deep Sleep Mask was the only one our testers kept on till morning without pushing it up onto their forehead.
The best mask is not the one with the fanciest contour. It is the one that blocks the light and you forget you are wearing.
The mask is shaped to seal against the bridge of the nose and the cheekbones, so the triangular gap that lets light into most flat masks simply isn’t there. Testers reported total darkness even with a bedside charger glowing and the curtains not quite closed.
Soft mulberry silk sits flat against the face rather than pressing into the eye sockets, so it does not dig in when you turn onto that side. The strap is a wide, adjustable band that holds position without tugging hair or leaving a mark.
The silk is naturally temperature-regulating, so it stayed cool where foam and polyester masks trapped heat, and it is hypoallergenic for sensitive skin. It washes at 30°C, folds flat for a carry-on, and is backed by a 40-day money-back guarantee.

That was half the test. The seal closes the gap at the nose, which is where standby LEDs and early daylight get in on most masks. Every mask here blocks light to a degree; this was the one that left no gap.
That was the other half, and it is where the contoured masks came unstuck. The Sleep&Glow contour is bulky to lie on and the Manta eye cups sit awkwardly and pressed on some testers. Mulberry silk sits flat against the face instead.
Silk is temperature-regulating and stayed cool across a full night. Traumkoala was the one that ran hot, because the synthetic fill traps heat.
Polyester traps heat and cheap straps go slack. At the other end, FIDDAA is roughly two-and-a-half times this price for no better blackout, so the spread here runs in both directions.
The strap adjusts and holds without snagging. Traumkoala’s was the one that worked loose overnight in our test.
Yes, at 30°C. It also folds flat for a bag, so it travels without creasing into a shape you cannot use.
There is a 40-day money-back guarantee, so you can judge it over a run of real nights rather than one.
